Plot / Synopsis / Review:
A Tale Of Two Sisters is arguably the most creepy tale to emerge from east Asia since Hideo Nakata's much-imitated 1998 masterpiece Ringu. The spine-chilling moments occur regularly in the first half of the film before giving way to somewhat histrionic moments and baffling, protracting twists. But even they don't undermine its power.
Loosely based on a Korean folk-story, the film mostly plays out as an extended flashback after a prologue that features a doctor asking a seemingly mute girl "Can you tell me about that day?"
Su-Mi (Lim) and her younger sister Su-Yeon (Mun) arrive home with their father Mu-Hyun (Kim) after they've spent some time in hospital for an unspecified malady. However, it soon becomes clear that mental illness is at the heart of their problems. Not only do the girls have an uneasy - and in the case of Su-Mi, openly acrimonious - relationship with their stepmother Eun-Joo (Yum), but all three females seem to be suffering from varying neurotic disturbances. Aren't they always in ghost stories? Anyway, Mu-Hyun seems largely insensitive to the tension around him, merely doling out pills occasionally.

Plot / Synopsis / Review:

Jookran High School is an ordinary high school with its pressures and requirements for the students to conform and pursue the better education. However, underneath its seemingly normal struggle between discipline and the resistance of the adolescence lie the school's dark and dirty secrets, and a terrifying fury, which is unleashed with the death of Mr. Park, a teacher of room 3-3, whose nickname was an "Old fox".
The fear for the unrest in the school forces teaches to impose a "silent regime" on students who had seen the dead body of the Old fox hanging in the school's overpass. As if it had been expected, painting the scene of death by a senior classmate Ji-oh arouses a lot of abuse from a room 3-3's new teacher called Mad dog.
Amid the strange rumors that spread throughout the school, Jung-sook, who always used to be compared with the Mad dog's favorite student So-young, commits suicide, and the Mad dog himself disappears with no traces left.
Meanwhile, a former senior student from room 3-3, Eun-young who a literature teacher appointed to his alma mater is molested by the words left over his telephone by the Old fox the night before he died. Eun-young finally suspects that the horrific events happened in the school, had something to do with the death of her best friend nine years ago...

The sensational movie, Whispering Corridor: Memento Mori from the summer of 1998 had been entitled, An Acacia during filming to reflect a story about pure love and friendship between girls. However, there was no need to change anything in the sequel, because both of the success of the first and plot itself - much like an acacia. In fact, when two young directors, Kim Tae-Yong and Min Gyu-Dong, were chosen to make the movie, they were given no guidelines at all for the second story. They willingly accepted the conditions to come up with whatever story matched the title, so they filmed it with added inspiration. They had already dealt with the emotions of high school girls in their short film, The Seventeen, which focuses more on high school girls than on horror - exploring the roots of the restlessness and angst of adolescent girls. The "Exchanging Diary" among the students take a particularly important role in the main motive. One girl had committed suicide and the aftermath permeates the school. This death reminds us of the anxiety which will never be dealt with after adolescence. Consequently, love is the main theme in the sequel. The ghost's presence in the school resonates disappointment in love, yet is as pure and fragrant as an acacia.

Rõ ràng là có khá nhiều sự kỳ vọng vào Alone. Một là bởi trong khoảng một năm trở lại đây, không có bất kỳ phim kinh dị Nhật, Hàn hay Trung Quốc nào thực sự xuất sắc cả (tính tới thời điểm này, tôi vẫn chưa xem được Black House và Epitaph, hai phim kinh dị thuộc loại pyschological của Hàn Quốc được đánh giá rất cao trong mùa hè vừa qua). Trái với tình cảnh bi đát của phim kinh dị Nhật-Hàn-Trung, người ta thấy bỗng nổi lên phim kinh dị Thái Lan. Một dẫn chứng cụ thể, phim kinh dị Thái Lan đoạt tới hơn 10 giải thưởng lớn của hội đồng phim ảnh nước này năm ngoái mà ở đó những cái tên như Dorm hay 13 Beloved được vinh danh. Tuy vậy, với những ai thích phim kinh dị kiểu Ringu có thể sẽ không thấy khoái Dorm hay 13 Beloved cho lắm. Dorm giống như một phim kinh dị thuộc dạng experimental và mang đậm chất cult (trường đoạn lũ nam sinh ngồi xem phim chẳng hạn) còn 13 Beloved thì lại là pyschological đậm chất gore. Còn Alone, qua trailer người ta thấy ngay đây đúng là kiểu phim ma nữ áo trắng như Ringu đã bị khai thác cạn kiệt bấy lâu nay!

Nhưng tại sao lại kỳ vọng vào Alone khi nó lại là ma nữ áo trắng tóc suýt dài như cái ảnh trên đến thế? Nguyên do thứ hai, đạo diễn của bộ phim chính là bộ đôi Banjong Pisanthanakun và Parkpoom Wongpoom, tức tác giả của bộ phim Shutter mà tôi từng review hồi mới lập blog. Không thể nói phim kinh dị Thái Lan chỉ có từ Shutter bởi trước đó đã có tới gần chục phim Nangnak hoặc như Art of the Devil cực kỳ rùng rợn và máu me. Tuy vậy, cùng với những Ong Bak hay Tom Yum Goong, Shutter rõ ràng giúp cho điện ảnh Thái Lan tiếp cận được với khán giả nước ngoài nhiều hơn. Bằng chứng là việc người Mỹ đã mua quyền remake Shutter và sẽ cho phát hành vào năm 2008. Shutter remake sẽ có sự tham gia của Rachael Taylor từng tham gia trong Transformers

Năm 2007, Banjong và Parkpoom quyết định gạt sang một bên các dự án riêng để tái hợp trong một bộ phim kinh dị mới mang tên Alone. Vẫn là thể loại ma nữ nhưng chỉ qua đoạn trailer, khán giả đã đủ thấy chết khiếp. Ma ra ma, sợ ra sợ, nói chung xem trailer mà đã cảm thấy bị cuốn hút quá chừng cho dù vẫn ngần đấy chất liệu để tạo ra nỗi sợ hãi. Và khi xem xong phim, tôi cảm thấy Alone là một phim kinh dị thuộc hàng khá. Sẽ không tránh khỏi so sánh với Shutter, như có bạn hôm qua comment ở quick comment rằng Alone chán hơn Shutter. Nhưng bản thân tôi thì thấy sự chênh lệch giữa Alone và Shutter không đáng kể là bao, có những điểm Shutter hơn Alone nhưng rõ ràng có những cái Alone ăn đứt Shutter. Điều này tôi sẽ nói ngay sau đây!

Câu chuyện Alone xoay quay Pim, một phụ nữ Thái Lan nhưng lại sống cùng chồng là Wee ở Hàn Quốc. Trong ngày sinh nhật của Pim, có người tiên đoán rằng một cái gì đó hay một ai đó mà cô đã đánh mất từ lâu nay sẽ trở lại bên cô. Nhiều người không biết rằng lý do Pim chuyển tới Hàn Quốc để sống là để trốn tránh cảm giác tội lỗi khi là người sống sót sau một ca phẫu thuật dính liền với người chị song sinh. Người chị Ploy của cô qua đời sau vụ phẫu thuật mà Pim cứ đòi thực hiện chỉ vì tình yêu của cô dành cho Wee. Trong quá khứ, Pim đã chọn Wee chứ không phải Ploy, hay là đặt tình yêu trên tình chị em với người chị song sinh dính liền của mình. Cái chết của Ploy luôn ám ảnh Pim từ khi đó. Nhưng Pim không thể trốn tránh được mãi. Một cú điện thoại từ Thái Lan tới Hàn Quốc. Mẹ của Pim lâm bệnh nặng và sắp qua đời. Đồng nghĩa Pim phải trở về Thái Lan để thăm mẹ. Thăm lại quê hương, trở về với nơi mà cô từng trải qua thời thơ ấu, Pim vô cùng sợ hãi bởi cô biết hồn ma của người chị Ploy vẫn đang ở đó, và luôn chờ đợi cô...

Còn riêng về hiệu ứng của Alone thì quả là quá tuyệt vời, hơn đứt anh Shutter. Rõ ràng sau Shutter, tên tuổi của Banjong và Parkpoom phải ở vị thế cao hơn trước và việc họ được rót nhiều tiền đầu tư hơn là chuyện đương nhiên. Cả Alone mang một tông màu tối, cực kỳ tối tăm và phảng phất đổ màu sepia cổ kính. Ngay cả cảnh ở Pim một mình ở ngoài bờ biển cũng được làm tối hẳn đi. Còn về tông sepia, sepia xuất hiện rõ ràng ở trong những đoạn Pim nhớ lại về quá khứ và phảng phát ở hiện tại. Điều này ngầm chỉ rằng bên cạnh Pim luôn luôn có quá khứ và có một điều gì đó trong quá khứ lúc nào cũng ám ảnh lấy cô. Khi trông thấy ngôi nhà tuyệt đẹp của Pim ở Thái Lan, tôi không thể không liên tưởng tới A Tale of Two Sisters - một câu chuyện kinh dị khác về hai chị em. Và tới một cảnh khi con ma treo người trên chiếc quạt trần ở trên cao, lại một lần nữa tôi liên tưởng tới bộ phim Hàn Quốc khi cô chị nằm trên giường, ma đứng trước mặt, lơ lửng và máu chảy ra... Những cảnh kinh dị rõ ràng như được nâng cấp hơn hẳn. Còn về số lượng cảnh kinh dị thì vẫn khá nhiều, tương đương như Shutter.

Về tổng thể, rõ ràng hai đạo diễn người Thái Lan thành công với Alone. Một câu chuyện đậm chất Á Đông, một bộ phim kinh dị đậm chất châu Á mà các fan hâm mộ đã phải chờ đợi khá lâu. Có thể twist phim dễ đoán nhưng rõ ràng câu chuyện và thông điệp trong Alone rất mạnh mẽ. Chưa kể việc Alone bất ngờ lồng thêm yếu tố pyschological ở 15 phút cuối phim khiến tôi cảm giác diễn xuất của Masha Wattanapanich khá tốt, cho dù trước đây tôi chưa xem phim nào của cô này cả. Những chọn lựa giữa tình chị em hay gia đình với tình yêu luôn luôn là khó khăn, nhất là với trường hợp của Pim và Ploy - sinh đôi dính liền. Chỉ cần một quyết định sai lầm thôi sẽ có thể thay đổi tất cả và khiến người ta lầm lối từ hết sai lầm này tới sai lầm khác.

Cốt truyện:

When Tun reveals his latest pictures, he finds some mysterious shadows, while the couple is systematically haunted by the ghost of the girl. Tun investigates and finds that the victim was his former shy and weird girlfriend Natre (Achita Sikamana), who studied with him in the college. Later Jane discloses deep and hidden secrets about the relationship of Natre, Tun and his friends.

Cảnh sát bèn nhờ đến Hyun Min, một nhà nghiên cứu khoa học trợ giúp. Its body melted down, a skull is found by the river. It’s the fourth skull. There are no other ways to identify the victim but face reconstruction. However, Hyun-min (starred by SHIN Hyun-jun), a face reconstruction specialist at National Institute of Scientific Investigation, decides the leave the Institute. To him, saving his daughter who gets sicker by the day is more important. One day, a researcher named Sun-young (starred by SONG Yoon-ah) shows up at his doorstep with the forth skull. However, Hyun-min refuses to take the job.Against Hyun-min’s refusal to take the job, Sun-young disappears leaving the skull behind in his house. Oddly enough, with the skull’s arrival, Hyun-min begins to suffer from nightmares and illusions. In the meantime, the police find out that all the victims had a unique body composition called Beta-allergy, and the murders were associated with heart transplants. Hyun-min realizes that his daughter’s transplanted heart comes from one of the victims and begins to work on the fourth skull. With Sun-young’s help, he finally reconstructs the skull. However, as the victim’s identity is known, he falls into a deeper world of nightmares and illusions.

Hyun-min (Shin Hyun-jun) works for the police, reconstructing faces by examining and interpreting their skulls. His daughter undergoes a heart transplant, and as her condition deteriorates, he loses his interest in his job. Hyun-min suspects that his daughters illness after the operation is caused by the heart, although her doctor, Dr. Yoon, tell him that his daughter is experiencing only minor complications. Distraught, Hyun-min quits his job to care for his duaghter full time. Meanwhile, the police are dealing with a series of bizarre murder cases, where the victim has had all their flesh dissolved away with acid, leaving only the bones behind. Sun-young (Song Yoon-ah) brings the skull of the fourth victim to Hyun-min, hoping that he'll be able to reconstruct the face. With the skull in their house, his daughter begins to experience visions of a distraught woman in a white robe. Hyun-min reconstructs the face of the victim, and it soon transpires that they all suffered from a (fictitious) affliction known as 'beta-allergy'. Tests reveal that Hyun-min's daughter has the condition, meaning that she has received the heart of someone who did. Romance blossoms between Hynu-min and Sun-young, and as they investigate, they uncover an organ transplant conspiracy - the murder victims were killed for their body parts, and it becomes apparent that Dr. Yoon knows more than he's letting on.

A sophisticated sculptor, Hemi, and 4 other people are invited to a gallery of dolls. They are excited to pose to be a doll model. Superintendent, Mr. Choi, and Jae-won, a doll-maker, are the hosts who invite them to this gallery.

The gallery is in the beautiful forest, and the surrounding is just like fairy tales, but there are some uneasy things to enjoy themselves. The superintendent is hiding something from them. The doll maker Jae-won, who's helped by a wheel chair doesn't come out of her workroom. Hemi meets Mina, a mysterious girl who says she has known Hemi for years.

The strange noises at night...and the dolls seem to keep an eye on the every movement the guests are making as if they were real human beings.
